Spring Into Fitness

Most folks when asked what their goals for summer are, say, to get fit and be healthier. In fact, a lot of our summer goals mimic our New Year’s resolutions. There is this view or perspective that fit and healthy are destinations, when in fact it is a lifestyle. That is why the Y is for healthy living, it is with this understanding that everyone is on a journey to healthy living and we are here to encourage and assist you on your path. With 8 locations and Wellness Directors at each, your journey is just an appointment away.

Here is what some of our experts have to say as they lead the way to healthier living:

Anne Villella-Covert, Health & Fitness Director at the North Canton YMCA
As the days start to get longer; and the temperatures warmer (we hope), it’s a great time to start or renew your fitness goals. Whether you’re lacing-up sneakers for the first time, or training for a marathon, here are some things you can do to be successful:
• Schedule your workouts like a Dr. or hair appointment… make them a priority
• Set realistic goals for yourself…start small and work your way up
• Exercise with a friend… it makes the workout fun, and holds you accountable to someone
• Eat a light meal or snack BEFORE your workout… not enough fuel in the tank makes the car stall
• Hydrate BEFORE and AFTER your workout…dehydration may cause collapse
• Match your eating habits with your workout… don’t give-up everything you love, but eat less of it; and in moderation. A one-hour workout does not mean you “earned” an entire supreme pizza!
• Allow for set-backs… don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t see immediate results

Heather Nettle, MA, ACSM-HFS, Health & Wellness Director of the Paul & Carol David YMCA
Circuit training has excellent fitness benefits including:
• Improved cardiovascular fitness
• Improved strength and muscle endurance
• Improved agility
• Improved body composition
• Improved mood and energy
It checks a lot of boxes off for what you need for fitness each week!

Crystal Winfrey-Ellington- Health & Wellness Director at the Eric Snow YMCA
It is important to set goals. “If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you. If you go to work on your plan, your plan will go to work on you. Whatever good things we build end up building us.” -Jim Rohn
Personally, I love the Ironman Triathlon event because it also promotes Cross-training. A great way to get the most out of different activities, decreases injury and increases your overall fitness which allows you to become more functionally active in your daily activities.
Our Ironman Triathlon will begin April 28th, 2015

As the weather warms and you start having the desire to move more, let the Y help you start your journey. Remember spring training is just an appointment away.
