Inspired to Lead

"Giving kids clothes and food is one thing but it's much more important to teach them that other people besides themselves are important, and that the best thing they can do with their lives is to use it in the service of other people."- Dolores Huerta

As a parent my wish for my children is to encourage them to be all that they are destined for, truly desiring the best for them. However, as a parent sometimes that presents challenges. Our family goal during those times is always to focus on what is being learned and what character trait is being developed. Participating in programs at the Y and being surrounded by coaches, staff and peers that are very community minded helps reinforce the principals my children are learning at home. I am confident that the Y has helped to reinforce this, because I listen to my children talk, watch how they care for their classmates and friends and have a heart for giving.

The Y has programs to help nurture the potential of every child from cradle to career, and somewhere in the middle - our teens. The Ys Teen Leaders Club is a program focused on building leadership and volunteerism in youth. Participants help at local Y’s and community events throughout the year. Many trips and events are available including a summer week long leadership development program called Leaders Training School.

Mariah wanted to share her Y story to encourage other teens to get involved. “Ever since I was little I was always involved at the Y one way or another. My older sister went to camp Tippecanoe every summer which led me to go a couple times myself. I always thought it was a great place to escape, and unplug that wasn't judgmental at all. Everyone was always themselves and you didn't have to hide anything. I met friends at Camp I never thought I would be friends with, and are still friends with to this day. When I stopped going to camp I was introduced to Teen Leaders Club, by a good friend at the time. I absolutely loved it! I could volunteer for the community while hanging out with my friends. There are also tons of events like rallies and overnighters where I made friends from all across Ohio and other states. Some of my best friends came from Leaders and the Y. As a senior it will be sad to leave Leaders Club, but I am excited for those coming in that will get to experience the amazing group of people, that treats you like family. There is no judging, which is a wonderful thing to be part of when the world is already so harsh. I wouldn't be the confident, and independent woman I am today if it weren't for this program, and interactions with such uplifting advisors from all around. Because of them I have learned to be my own person, and realize I don't have to try to be anyone else.”

We are excited to see what the future holds for Mariah, how far her passion and confidence takes her and what amazing things she will do in her community!
