A World of Possibility

WOW - What wonderful winter weather wise we have been having, at least in Ohio! I don’t know about you but when the temps turned up a bit my kids were back in shorts. Yes, seriously shorts! The kids clamored, “But mom it’s 40out.” While my children know that it is winter, they are kids and will always have summer fun on their minds. As the temps creep up the conversation will inevitably turn to what fun they are looking to have this summer from riding their bikes in the neighborhood, to lacrosse practice and of course to camp.

Camp Tippecanoe is one of their favorite places because of the variety that it offers from traditional camp activities to current event themed camps. Thanks to the help of volunteers, as well as a slew of other folks including campers, staff, families and donors, each summer at YMCA Camp Tippecanoe seems to get better and better.  The Force will Awaken and kick off our summer camp on June 19th. It will be a week full of Star Wars themed games and activities, and of course all the training a Jedi might need.

During Geek Week Specialty Camp, longtime volunteer and science guru Dan Galdun, will spark imagination and curiosity through a series of hands-on demonstrations and experiments. Campers who register for this program will explore many areas including astronomy, geology and fossils, chemistry, robotics, problem solving & puzzles and water powered rocketry.

The fun and adventure continues as our youngest campers are experiencing camp for the first time. This is a mini-week session and our staff is trained to help the little ones adjust to the idea of being away from home. During their stay our campers have a choice between Mini-Horse Camp, where they will have horse lessons each morning or Mini-adventure where they get to try a little of everything camp has to offer.

Camp really gets into the swing of things in July, with our Pirate themed Shiver me Tippers, complete with Mermaids and Davey Jones himself.  Camp volunteers Steve, who sits on the Camp Board, and Sara Shumaker, who’s name you might recognize from Canton’s Art scene, join our staff to offer a plethora of creative endeavors, including time in our brand new Mosaic Maker Space. Creative Creatures specialty camp offers art lessons and projects with Sara and Shu each morning, as well as the chance to make your own movie – now that’s magical! And speaking of magic back by popular demand is Magic Gathering, this time with special guest Indie comic industry insider and camp alum Sara Lindsay, who will lead a series of workshops on developing and producing independent comics.

And to wrap up a great summer experience, our friend Gary Broadbent has joined in for the fun again. Gary will be Boomeranging right back to us with tricks of his trade and the chance for campers to make their very own Boomerang.

So from shorts to summer to adventures and fun – that is what you will find this summer at Camp Tippecanoe!
