Why kids flourish at camp

Disconnecting to reconnect

Campers at YMCA Camp Tippecanoe spend their whole camp session free of electronics.  This helps them disconnect from technology and reconnect with their imagination, critical thinking skills, the great outdoors, and the people around them.  Campers connect with their cabinmates quicker and on a deeper level than they normally would with electronics.  Because of these connections formed among campers, lifelong friendships and lifelong skills are developed.

FRIENDShip & COMMUNITY

In a survey conducted by Seer Analytics, 73% of parents said that camp helps their kids make friendships.  At YMCA Camp Tippecanoe, lifelong friendships are created among campers.  Group activities build a sense of teamwork and community, while cabin time and shared interests foster deep friendships that can last a lifetime.

independence & Confidence

At YMCA Camp Tippecanoe we create a supportive environment that allows our campers to have safe adventures.  In addition to creating friendships and fostering community, Camp Tippecanoe provides opportunities for campers to explore their interested, try new things, and challenge themselves.  Along with these activity opportunities, campers are responsible for taking care of their belongings and working with their cabinmates to keep their cabin clean.  Trying new things and caring for oneself and one's belonging are perfect ways to begin building independence and confidence.

character building & PERSONAL GROWTH

At YMCA Camp Tippecanoe we practice the YMCA's four core values of honesty, respect, caring, and responsibility, in addition to our "I Am Third" philosophy.  The "I Am Third" philosophy means we will put God (or faith/positive morals) first, others second, and ourselves third.  It is a great way for us to live as part of a community and put the needs of others above our own.  We also offer programs within our camp sessions that focus on personal growth and goal setting.  In our Leathers program, for campers ages 9-11, campers seek the challenge of following goals.  The goals include growing in body, mind and spirit, friendship and to care for others.  In our Raggers program, for campers 12 and older, campers choose to go through a seven-stage process of spiritual and personal growth that involves peer support and symbolic bandanas.  As a staff we look for every opportunity to provide learning and growth for our campers.
