Partners in Progress - Ensuring our Promise

“We cannot accomplish all that we need to do without working together.” – Bill Richardson

In March 2015 the YMCA of Central Stark County and the Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority, SMHA, joined together to strengthen the community by providing opportunities for residents to lead active healthier lives. In the second year of this partnership we have seen many members utilizing the Y programs and services. In order to receive a Regional YMCA membership, the SMHA resident will work with the staff at SMHA and the YMCA to verify residency and complete the necessary paperwork.

One mother was able to join with her 10 year old daughter and they have been using the facility as a family. They completed the Jump Start program together in order to use the wellness area, they took Zumba as a family, and the daughter was enrolled in swim lessons. This partnership was an important factor toward a healthy lifestyle both physically and mentally for them. Without it they may not have had the opportunity to take advantage of what we have to offer.  In fact she added, “I’ve been concerned about my recent weight gain and lack of self-esteem as well as lack of activity. My daughter would love to participate in gymnastics, swimming and sports. I truly appreciate this awesome opportunity and will not take it for granted. I praise the Lord that you offer assistance through SMHA.”

The YMCAs promise is that no one is turned away from the Y due to an inability to pay and this partnership provides the Y with another avenue to reach out and provide opportunities to our community.  Since this agreement there have been over 300 members that have joined or renewed their membership.  We look forward to future of this partnership and the possibilities.
