Change Starts Here

“Children may close their ears to advice, but they keep their eyes open to an example.”

As we start the new school year, those words are ones to keep close at hand. This not only applies to our children, but often times our classmates, coworkers, friends, and spouses. A positive spirit partnered with goals that are being met is a powerful force. It is often said that change starts here, meaning change starts with oneself and that is exactly the story of Jen and her family.

About one year ago we shared a little bit about Jen’s story. “After having two children and no real fitness in my life, I was in desperate need of a change. I was under a lot of stress at the time and felt that I really needed something just for me.” At that time my husband had just purchased a family membership to the Y so our oldest son would have a place to practice basketball. In the process of signing up, I took a tour to see all that the Y has to offer. My husband encouraged me to pursue a personal trainer and my JumpStart Coach recommended Michelle V.

Michelle has encouraged and challenged Jen and has even been inspired by her, sharing that “Jen has really come out of her shell, and has gained the confidence to join in our group exercise classes.”  One of the most exciting parts to the story, Michelle added, “Is that Jen’s family is now working out and setting goals together, they have even done more outside activities because they have more energy.”

While Jen has set actual goals she is not focused on the scale but rather on becoming healthier. She and her husband have lost over 80lbs. combined, but more importantly they have a goal to get fit together and run their first 5K together in October.

What a great example to lead your family and others into a healthier lifestyle, and lasting impact!

Thank you to Jen and her family for sharing their journey and to Michelle V. for sharing your passion to encourage others on this path. Feel free to share your story at ystories@ymcastark.org
