These are just a few of the ways we recognize and instill Character at Camp:
Wooden Nickels:
No good deed goes unnoticed at camp. Each time someone is “caught” living by one of the six pillars of character they are offered a Camp Tippecanoe Wooden Nickel. Anyone can give Wooden Nickels and anyone can get one, whether it be a staff person or fellow camper. The idea is to “pay it forward” to another person and our hope is to someday find Wooden Nickels all over the world.
Character Cabin:
Before our closing campfire, one camper from each cabin is chosen as the best representative of good character. This group forms a “cabin” who reads at our closing chapel service, carries their cabin’s Mandela to the campfire, is noted in our camp newsletter, and signs the Canoe Cup. The Canoe Cup hangs in the top of our Main Lodge for all who visit camp to see and is the ultimate acknowledgement a camper can receive.
Golden Plunger and Golden Jingle-lotta:
In recognition of the cleanest cabin in camp, a group of campers may earn the Golden Plunger to display in the Main Lodge on their table for all to admire. The cleanest table in camp is awarded the Golden Jingle-lotta. Only campers know what a Jingle-lotta is.
Staff Awards:
Each summer, our staff has the opportunity to earn one of our distinguished staff awards. New staff can earn the Rookie of the Year, for proving themselves right out of the gates. Our staff motto states that God comes first, my fellow camper is second and “I am Third“. The staff person who lives by this motto, earns an award with that title. The Eagles Award is given to the staff person chosen by the Camp Directors.
