About Us

Talks to bring the YMCA to Lake Township first started in 1998 when a group of community leaders formed the first Lake YMCA Board. Coincidentally, Lake Local Schools was in the process of renovating their High School and Middle School to include a comprehensive community campus to serve the needs of both area students and families. The Field House was the first portion of what would become the Lake YMCA to open in the Fall of 2003. The 24,000 sq. ft. building served the needs of both school activities and YMCA programs while the rest of the facility was under construction.

The 25,000 sq. ft. Lake YMCA building opened as a full facility in September of 2004. The facility is located within the Lake Community Center complex along with Lake High School and Middle School, Mercy Medical Center, the Lake Township Chamber of Commerce, and the Stark County Public Library. These community partners give the Lake YMCA a very unique opportunity to collaborate on various programs and share resources that provide high quality services to the Lake Community.

Although the YMCA building is owned by Lake Local Schools, the Y is maintained by the staff and it's countless volunteers. Operation of the facility is fully funded through membership and program income, completely independent of Lake Local Schools. However, the Y is fortunate to host several programs such as before/after school care and youth basketball out of Uniontown, Hartville, and Lake Elementary.

Since opening, the Lake Community YMCA has continually strived to serve the needs of the community through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. With programs such as Activate America, Healthy Kids Day, and America on the Move Week, the Lake Community YMCA and staff are dedicated to addressing the national crisis of obesity affecting youth, teens, adults, and older adults in the Stark County Area.

In the Summer of 2010, the Lake YMCA broke ground on it's first expansion project. Included in the expansion was a brand new Health and Wellness Center, small and large group exercise rooms, a new teen and family room, and two new family locker rooms. The first to be completed was Health and Wellness Center, which opened to members in November of 2010. The remainder of the project was completed in January of 2011.
